Celebrating Our Hospice Volunteers, Spring 2014

In celebration of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, CHANS Home Health & Hospice honored Hospice Care Program Volunteers on April 17.  CHANS management and Hospice Care Program staff welcomed volunteers to the Knights of Columbus Hall in Brunswick for an evening of food, fun, and prizes.  The event celebrated the outstanding work of the Hospice Volunteers and recognized several individuals for their extraordinary efforts.

"The Hospice Volunteers are a critical piece of the hospice support system, which allows people to remain in their homes, and in doing so, Volunteers provided an immeasurable service," stated Carl Demars, MD, CHANS Medical Director.  "We are so pleased to be able to put on this special event to celebrate the services of our Hospice Volunteers."

Over the past year, seventy Hospice Volunteers provided 3,500 hours of direct care and grief support to persons in our community who are at end-of-life and to their families and caregivers in the form of companionship and respite care.  At the celebration, many volunteers were recognized for their years of service and others were given awards for their support of the Hospice Volunteer Program.

Special recognition was given to Patricia Parker, who received the Alyce Redman Volunteer of the Year Award.  Ann Marie Bilodeau and her dog, Pup, also a Hospice Volunteer, received the Rin Tin Tin Award, which recognized the unique and special service Ann and Pup provide.  In addition to the award winners Cindy Bessmer, Barbara Blanchard, Burt Brewer, Lu Jump, Sharon Kennedy, Nancy Morin, Hank Nicolaus, Lucy Pieh, Donald Weatherbee, and Gwen Zaborowski received pins for their lifetime contribution of more than 1,000 hours of service to the Hospice Volunteers.

CHANS Home Health & Hospice also recognized the following businesses and individuals who generously donated time, talents, and gifts to the celebration:  A&R Plumbing and Heating, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Brunswick Massage & Wellness, Cathy Alexander, El Camino Restaurant, Fairground Cafe, Halcyon Yarn, Jean Weatherbee, Leapin' Lizzards, Mid Coast Hospital Gift Shop, Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, Morning Glory Natural Foods, Reflections by Lucie and Assoc., Reny's Department Store, Soakology Foot Sanctuary & Teahouse, Theater at Monmouth, and Wilbur's of Maine.
